I was asked yesterday by a news outlet to provide a few quotes about social media marketing. Even though I’ve written tons of copy about SM marketing before – presos to white papers and everything in-between – I just typed out five “truths” that were top of mind and hit send. Here’s what I came up with. I’d love to get your feedback. Or, better yet, have you share your top-of-mind beliefs. Sharing is caring. And caring might help out a peer or two. So go for it…
“Spend more time planning and less time “doing” to ensure success with your social media marketing program.”
“Before you start to broadcast what your selling across every available – and trendy – social media platform, make sure to invest time in researching how people – and companies – engage on each platform. Facebook isn’t Snapchat, and Instagram will never be YouTube.”
“Social Media marketing is never safe. You’ll make mistakes. And sometimes that’s a good thing. Learnings from your efforts will fuel all future actions. Mistakes will only make you smarter and more effective in the long run.”
“The content you are featuring today on your social channels may not resonate with your fans and the public tomorrow. So stay alert. As their Likes and “who cares?” evolve, you have to as well.”
“Sometimes you have to buy amplification. And that’s ok. As you spend your budget (especially if you’re spending for the first time), make sure to pay close attention to key user-behavior metrics. Both organic and paid. If something works, fuel it (more content, more $). If it doesn’t, jump into the next creative Jacuzzi and test the jets.”
Today’s five truths.
